The downside of antibiotics – part II

Survival of destructive bacteria
After treatment with any antibiotics or anthelmintics some useful bacterial species pass away and will never be restored again. The surviving bacteria will struggle for appeared vacant places. Some bacteria, which were suppressed before, become able to flourish. As a rule, these changes are not favorable for the animal!

In a healthy gut suppressed bacteria are usually pathogenic ones. After antibiotic treatment and death of good bacteria they rapidly start to grow on the gut surface. These types of bacteria do not care about the fate of host – these bacteria can survive outside the animal body, while the friendly bacterial species cannot.

Death of friendly bacteria causes malnutrition
Lacking useful bacteria the horse begins to suffer from malnutrition because the rate of digestion decreases, synthesis of native vitamins is restricted and toxins are produced in a large scale. Even with a full feeding trough animals can be hungry because feeding passes through the body uselessly without aid from friendly bacteria.

This is just the beginning of the problem! Pathogens can destroy the gut surface and enter into the blood. With the blood stream infection is spread all over the body. The primary infection is usually accompanied by a second wave.

Keep your horse healthy!
It is unwise to recommend reject chemotherapeutic treatment, but it can be suggested to keep the horse healthy in order to prevent disease by using herbs, that can at least prolong the time between such treatments. A healthy body has amazing ability to heal all disease and combat any infections!!
